Administrative director | flute, composer & conductor
Angus Lee is one of the most versatile performer-composers of his generation. Under the full support of the Aedas Scholarship and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund, Lee completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s studies at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts [HKAPA] and the Royal Academy of Music RAM; UK] with the highest honours. Since he graduated in 2016, he has joined the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble as a core member, as well as making regular freelance appearances with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. Lee has also performed on tours with the Lucerne Festival Alumni Ensemble-Orchestra.
Today, Lee is recognised as one of Hong Kong’s foremost flautists with a specialist focus in the field of contemporary music performance. Initially an autodidact, Angus is fortunate to have studied with flautists Tim Wilson, Olivier Nowak, Samuel Coles and Kate Hill, who emphasised open-mindedness parallel to excellence in the fundamentals of flute playing. He furthered his specialist training in new music at Hong Kong New Music Ensemble’s Modern Academy, London Sinfonietta Academy, and the prestigious Lucerne Festival Academy [LFA].
On his second visit to Lucerne in 2015, Lee was selected to perform as soloist in Pierre Boulez’s Mémoriale [ ... explosante-fixe ... Originel] at the composer’s 90th birthday concert series. He would return to reprise his soloist role five months later, at Boulez’s memorial concert at KKL Lucerne’s Concert Hall, alongside the LFA Alumni Ensemble under Matthias Pintscher.
While not performing, Lee maintains a busy schedule as a composer. Lee took initial lessons with Ms. Poly Ng and Mr. Maurice Poon, but was largely self-taught. In recent years, he had the opportunity to take lessons from renowned composers Mark Andre, Michael Finnissy, Luca Francesconi, Toshio Hosokawa, Dmitri Kourliandski, Philippe Manoury and Yann Robin at international masterclasses such as the impuls Academy [AT], the Modern Academy [HK], the ilSuono Academy for Young Composers [IT], the Delian Academy for New Music [GR], the Académie Musica-Philippe Manoury, ARCo21 Composition Academy [FR] and the Ticino Musica International Academy for Young Composers [CH]. His works have been performed by, among others, Ensemble Suono Giallo, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Multilatérale, Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, members of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and Trio Accanto.
Lee is a core member of the NOVA Ensemble since 2017, and took up the ensemble’s administration directorship in 2018.
