Sean Lai


Born and raised in Hong Kong, Sean Lai graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree, majoring in violin, under the tutelage of Ms. Ho Hong-ying. Lai had later graduated with a Master of Music degree at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber Dresden.

Lai has participated in various Baroque masterclasses and lessons from Monica Hugget and Nadja Zwiener at the likes of the New Dutch Academy, Academy of Ancient Music and The English Consort.

Lai has also participated in the NJO as the associadte concert master in 2012, and concertised in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag and Belgium with the orchestras. As an active chamber and Baroque musician, Lai regularly performs with Die Konzertisten and various opera companies in Hong Kong.

A forward thinking music entrepreneur, Lai was formerly the leader of the Zephyrus String Quartet, prior to relaunching the NOVA Ensemble in 2017, and taking up the ensemble’s artistic directorship in 2018.

Saen Lai is the artistic director of the PRISM Chamber Music Festival. He debuted at PCMF in 2018 with NOVA Ensemble, performing works by Rautavaara, Takashi Yoshimatsu and Villa-Lobos.
