Crystal Tam Shu-kiu received her bachelor of music degree from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in 2016, under the guidance of Olivier Thiery and Rick Stotijn, members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra respectively. Prior to her studies in the Netherlands, Tam completed the Advanced Certificate programme at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2013, studying with Mr. Eddie Zong.
Tam had her first international summer music academy experience in the Netherlands in 2011, where she felt deep admiration for the musical education in the country. In 2012 and 2015, she was nominated to be the associate principal bassist in the Netherlands Youth Orchestra (NJO).
During her years in Amsterdam, Tam was actively playing in different orchestras as guest bassist. She has the privilege of working under some of the most renowned artists of our time, including Iván Fischer, Mischa Maisky, Jan Willem de Vriend, Anna Fedorova, and Bram van Sambeek. Since her return to Hong Kong, Tam has been appointed a member of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.
Tam has been a core member of the NOVA Ensemble since 2017.
Crystal Tam debuted at PRISM Chamber Music Festival in 2018 with NOVA Ensemble, performing works by Rautavaara and Takashi Yoshimatsu.
