Yat-ho Tsang

baroque flute


TSANG Yat-ho is one of the first baroque flutists from Hong Kong. He is now an active freelance flutist performing regularly in the Netherlands and Hong Kong. He has performed in concert halls such as The Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, The Santa Cecilia Hall in Rome, De Doelen in Rotterdam, and in cities such as Paris, Tokyo and Shanghai.

Performing as a baroque flutist, Yat-ho has worked with: De Nieuwe Philharmonie Utrecht under the direction of Johannes Leertouwer; Ensemble Genesis under the direction of Masato Suzuki; baroque ensemble of the Amsterdam Western Church (Westerkerk) - ‘t CabinetDie Konzertisten and Cammer MusicusHong Kong SingFest; and Early Music Society of Hong Kong.

Performing as a modern flutist, Yat-ho appeared as a soloist and principal flute with various orchestras. In 2012, he was selected to join the Dutch National Student Orchestra and toured around the Netherlands and Rome under the baton of Lucas Vis. In 2016, Yat-ho performed Jacques Ibert’s Flute Concerto with CUHK Chung Chi Wind Orchestra as a soloist. With his ongoing interest in contemporary music, Yat-ho has collaborated and performed new works by young composers with members of renown Dutch contemporary music groups Nieuw Ensemble and Atlas Ensemble.

In 2018, Yat-ho curated his first multi-media baroque concert - Song is Being in Hong Kong, combining live music performance, poetry and storytelling into one well-balanced concert. After the huge success of the premiere, two reruns had been performed during Prism Chamber Music Festival 2018 in Hong Kong; and during Musica Antiqua Takamatsu 2019 in Takamatsu Japan with support from Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

Yat-ho has participated in baroque flute masterclasses given by Barthold Kuijken, Marc Hantaï, Frank Theuns, Karl Kaiser, Jed Wentz and Patrick Beuckels. He received his Bachelor in Baroque Flute Performance at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under renown historical flutist Marten Root; Bachelor in Modern Flute Performance at the same institution under Harrie Starreveld - leading specialist in contemporary flute music; Bachelor of Arts in Western Music at The Chinese University of Hong Kong under former principal flute of Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Izaskun Erdocia Uranga.


Yat-ho Tsang debuted at PRISM Chamber Music Festival in 2018 with Song Is Being, performing works by J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, E.J. de La Guerre, Handel, Monteverdi, Purcell, Telemann and Vivaldi.
