NOVA Ensemble was founded by violinist Sean Lai and clarinettist John Young, during their studies at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts [HKAPA] in 2013. Initially conceived as a clarinet quartet, the Ensemble was relaunched in 2017 after the recruitment of more instrumentalists, consisting largely of HKAPA graduates.
In 2018, NOVA launched and played host to one of the largest project conceived in the ensemble’s history : PRISM Chamber Music Festival, a platform dedicated to providing opportunity to fellow independent, emerging musicians and ensembles to showcase their work. This year, the Festival will return for the second time, supported by Hotel Stage and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
NOVA has presented the regional premières of a number of works, old and new, including works by Franck Bedrossian, Antonio Bertali, Sandeep Bhagwati, Dario Castello, Michaël Lévinas, Nico Muhly, and Einojuhani Rautavaara. Collaborating with living composers is also vital to NOVA’s artistic agenda, and in the 2019-20 season, NOVA will be commissioning and premiering two new works by composers Daniel Lo and Angus Lee.
The operations of the NOVA Ensemble has been generously funded and supported by the Calvin Chan Foundation Limited since 2018. The Foundation has kindly renewed its support for the Ensemble for the 2019-20 Season.
